February 19, 2024

According to a publication on the website of the newspaper A Gazeta, the Brazilian Patent and Trademark Office (BRPTO) has disclosed that, in 2023, 25,367 utility patents were filed in Brazil. This data was divided as follows:

TYPE OF APPLICANT

PERCENTAGE

NUMBER OF PATENTS

Residents

19.60%

4,971 Patents

Non-residents

80.40%

20,396 Patents

The BRPTO has also published a ranking of residents, which Petrobras leads with 125 patent filings (2.51% of the total) in 2023. Another interesting aspect is that, from the 50 top ranked, 32 are Brazilian universities, demonstrating a boost to the promotion of innovation in Brazil. Even more interesting is that the best ranked university is the Federal University of Campina Grande, in the State of Paraíba, with 101 patent filings (2.03% of the total), occupying second place in the ranking. This university greatly outperforms the nearest university, which is the Federal University of Minas Gerais, with 48 patents filed (0.97% of the total), occupying fourth place in the ranking.

On the other hand, the BRPTO has also released a ranking of non-residents, topped by Chinese companies Qualcomm and Huawei, with 1,134 patent filings (5.56% of the total) and 460 filings (2.26% of the total), respectively, in 2023. An intriguing aspect is the notable progress in technology, particularly in telecommunications, in recent years, marked by a significant number of patent filings. This underscores the remarkable potential for innovation and inventive capacity within this sector.

Agribusiness (Deere) is beginning to assert its presence, while chemical companies (BASF and Dow) demonstrate their potential for innovation Consumer goods companies like Unilever continually grapple with the challenge of reinvention, while tobacco companies (Nicoventures and Philip Morris) are making efforts to transition their business towards products that don't compromise the health of consumers.
